Digital Storage Space

If any of you need to FTP your Soundslides project to Digital Storage Space and don’t have an account, you can contact me regarding use of mine. I’m not posting it here for security reasons, so please email me at adam.glenn@journalism.cuny.edu. Meanwhile, here’s an outline, with links, of the workflow:

  1. Uploading source files
    1. Wiki Tutorials (Fetch)
    2. Digital Storage Space FTP Site
      1. digitalstoragespace.com
    3. Optimal naming convention for Web files and folders (lower case and without spaces)
      1. Each student should create their own folder – their last name all lower case
      2. Within that named folder, each student should create a soundslides folder
      3. Within the media-type folders, students should name their project by year, month and name (e.g. 0909usopen)
      4. Example URL: http://digitalstoragespace.com/11/geraets/photos/0809usopen/lastname_slug_01.jpg
  2. Next, find the URL to the publish_to_web folder, based on where you uploaded it to
    1. Finding the URL to Your File
      1. All students in the class of 2011 are automatically logged into the “11 folder. Therefore, the public URL for that class’s files will always begin with “http://digitalstoragespace.com/11
      2. To get the URL, please add the folder hierarchy (with forward slashes) and the complete name of your file to the end of the URL url (e.g. http://digitalstoragespace.com/11/geraets/photos/0809usopen/lastname_slug_01.jpg).
    2. http://digitalstoragespace.com/11/glenn/Soundslides/publish_to_web
    3. Copy the URL
  3. Embed into blog
    1. The SoundSlides Web site make available a very handy utility for generating Flash embed code for inserting the project into your content management system.
    2. Visit the Web site: http://www4.soundslides.com/apps/utilities/
    3. And paste in the URL to your slideshow (i.e. publish_to_web folder)
    4. Changes to the size in the embed code
      1. Can do in WordPress, but make sure to fix all the sizes.
      2. Can also use sizer on Soundslides embed code generator.
      3. Can also update the project in Soundslides, then export, FTP and generate new embed code.
    5. Grab the embed code and place in the HTML field of your post
